The Peoples Supermarket - Arthur Potts Dawson

If you haven’t heard by now chef turned social entrepreneur Arthur Potts Dawson has opened ‘The Peoples Supermarket’ on lamb’s conduit street in central London . Inspired by the Park Slope Food Coop in Brooklyn that was started in 1973 and now has 17,000 members and offers them a saving of 20%-40% off their weekly grocery bill and enjoys a turnover of $32m, the Peoples Supermarket is a great idea for the UK.
Dawson believes the big supermarket chains have had their day and the demand for a more ethical social model could and should come sooner than we think.
We had the pleasure of having Dawson at last years Harvest at Jimmy’s and are a big fan of The Peoples Supermarket. The People’s Supermarket aims to offer good value ethical, locally sourced produce and healthy food products; including refrigerated and frozen goods.
Anyone can join, but when you do you have to pledge to work in the shop a few hours every month. The workforce is nearly all volunteers which means the supermarket saves on staff costs and therefore can provide cheeper food. Members pay an annual fee of £25, volunteer 4 hours a month, and in turn get 10% off their shopping. Anyone can shop at The People’s Supermarket and it prides itself on making shopping cheaper. Any profits that are made go straight back into making the food even more affordable for its customers.
We recommend you check out an interview with the main man himself on The Independent.
